RETAILING: Different kinds of Stores and How to Improve it




Retailing holds a special fascination and interest for us from the years that we were directly connected with the small men's apparel. We found it exciting and the most challenging. So to get better view of the importance of retailing to us. We should realize that a large percentage of your consumer's dollar goes to pay for it It is difficult to pinpoint how much of the retail sales dollar goes to pay for the costs of retail operations. ("Retailing" 1979, XV)



There are ways of classifying Retail Stores:


Stores can be classified in several ways. Ownership is one commonly used criterion: the independent owned store versus the outlet that is a member of a chain of stores all owned by one party. The nature of the products carried is widely used to classify stores. There are grocery, drug, furniture, clothing, shoe, and a multitude of other stores each carrying different types of products. ( Buskirk R.H & Buskirk B.R., p.XV)



According to Buskirk R.H & Buskirk B.R. (1979) one kind of the retail stores is the APPAREL store, it is use as the model for instructional purposes because in many respects apparel merchants face the must difficult operational problems. They deal in a fashion product which makes their buying decisions difficult. If they buy the wrong fashions foe theirs costumer, they must take charge markdowns on those mistakes. Excellent inventory systems must be maintained to ensure that the stores's stocks are balanced among sizes, styles, colors, and items.



Second kind of retail stores is the GROCERY store, so well located supermarket shuns congested central business district locations and favors locations near large residential districts. Ease of getting into and out of the store's ample parking lot is important

. Supermarket owners try to locate so that they have good trading area around the store with no nearby competitors. But such locations are difficult to find. Grocery shoppers have strong tendency to go to the nearest stores.



Third one is the JEWELRY stores, so to the traditional jewelry stores was made extinct by the advent of the discount house, for jewelry was one of the items to be heavily discounted.
